Hershey Elementary’s fourth grade classes attended Landis Valley Museum last Friday. Landis Valley Museum is a “living history village and farm that collects, preserves and interprets the history and material culture of the Pennsylvania German rural community from 1740 to 1940.”* Hershey students got to experience life in the 1800s. Each fourth-grade class had their own personalized schedule. If “Schoolhouse” was on the list, students walked to the one-room school and met their teacher at the front door. Girls silently entered first, followed by the boys. Students took part in a lesson from the time period, complete with slates and chalk. For the Childhood Sampler session, fourth-graders experienced chores such as washing clothes by hand, building fences, fetching water, milking cows, and “making their beds” (by stuffing a large pillow case with hay). Other session titles from the day included: Historic craft-making, Archaeology, and Wool-spinning. During self-guided tours, teachers and students had opportunity to visit the tin shop, the country store and more! A student favorite is always the horse and wagon ride around the property. What a beautiful day is was to go back in time!

Click below to see the results of the Red Ribbon Door Decorating Contest. Congratulations and thank you to all the participants!
Red Ribbon Week was full of activities to raise awareness about drug prevention. We had door contests, spirit wear, black-out drugs, red day, silly sock day and put a cap on drug days. It was a great week of education and fun for our students! Thank you to the counselors and all the teachers who worked so hard for this important cause! All students are getting a visit from Cocoa the Bus. Cocoa helped students learn about the rules and routines to stay safe while riding school buses. The program was developed and delivered by members of the Transportation Department and bus drivers.
Our third grade students have been practicing their math skills and facts through the online "First in Math" program. They recently became ranked "3rd" place among all 3rd graders in the state utilizing the resource.
Red Ribbon Week is October 23-27, 2017. Red Ribbon Week is the nations largest and oldest drug prevention program in our nation. Since its beginning in 1985, the Red Ribbon has touched the lives of millions of people around the world. In response to the murder of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena, angered parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction cause by drugs in America. Today, the Red Ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities.
In celebration of Red Ribbon and in coordination with guidance lessons, the 5th graders participated in a large group assembly with K-9 Sergeant Tony Clements and K9 Chico from the Derry Township Police Department. The officer’s presentation enhanced the student’s knowledge in the area of drug education. He discussed the dangers of drugs, how K9 are used in the fight against drugs, as well as the drugs prevalent in this area. K-9 Chico did a demonstration on how police K9s are used in drug detection and searches. The visit encouraged each student to make positive choices and provided them the message that a drug-free life is a personal responsibility. The National theme is “Your Future is Key, So Stay Drug Free.” During the Week of October 23-27 – students are encouraged to participate in the daily themes for the week. Check back with our blog later this week for more photos from Red Ribbon Week! Room 23 tried coding today for the first time using Kodable. We are working on our growth mindsets and growing our brains!
