Third grade teachers and parents organized the first ever "Career Days" during the month of April. Students learned about 14 different careers and completed a booklet of details about each career. Upon the competition of a student's elementary years, each will have a career portfolio containing artifacts of learning. Our school counselors have also incorporated guidance lessons in the classrooms on the different standards as well. We appreciate all of the parent and community volunteers who made this event successful!

Students and their families participated in a Title One Reading and Math Learning Fair held by our reading and math interventionists. It was a fun evening where students shared their learning in math and reading with their families. We thank our staff reading and math teams in helping to make this event fun and successful!
Congratulations to our 5th grade 24 Tournament Math Challenge participants and finalists! After some spirited competition, requiring contestants to determine equations where random numbers calculate to 24, four students emerged as the squad to represent Hershey in the regional tournament later in spring. Congratulations to all the participants and finalists! First grade students in Miss Slatt’s class recently built a structure that could withstand the Huff and Puff of a wolf! Students read a version of the classic tale, Three Little Pigs, and were challenged to build a prototype of a shelter that could stand up against the force of a blow dryer. The constraints included using only straws, connectors, and Playdough. Students found that a firm, sturdy foundation was key in meeting the challenge. They also learned that good designs often need to be tested and improved upon.
Hershey Elementary students participated in a week of fun to celebrate "Read Across America" and Dr. Seuss. Students collected food during the "Green Eggs and Ham" food drive to donate to the local food bank. You could also see students reading each day and night to add to the school's total minutes for a reading incentive. Each day was celebrated with a special dress theme were students dressed in silly socks, character costumes, and wacky hats. It was a week of fun and excitement for all!
Students in room 21 worked for a week on a narrative writing piece related to being in a snow globe. Students added suspense, details, problem and solution to enrich their writing. They then got a chance to showcase and take ownership of their writing by recording themselves during a green screen application.
We have a third grade class of geologists in room 18! Students broke apart mock rocks to discover the ingredients inside and learned that real rocks are made up of many ingredients called "minerals." Next, they will test the ingredients to see what is really inside each mock rock just like a geologist would do with a real rock. What a fun hands-on experience!
On Friday, December 15th, second graders from Ms. Ober, Mrs. Brittain, and Mrs. Cin’s classes gathered in MPR 1 and were given four winter-themed STEM challenges. Families came to work with the kids to try the challenges. At one station, the kids showed off what they have learned about coding throughout the year. They explored Code.org with their families and classmates to use what they know about computer science to solve puzzles on the iPads. At another station called “Santa’s Parachute”, kids were given a bag of materials and had to find a way to make a parachute to get Santa to the ground safely (he couldn’t fall out and it had to be a soft landing). At the next center, “Shelf for the Elf”, kids built a secure shelf for an elf to sit on in order to not be touched by young kids using on playdough and popsicle sticks. At the last center, “Snowball Catapult”, kids made a catapult only using popsicle sticks, rubber bands, and a spoon in order to knock over paper cup snowmen with fake snowballs (marshmallows). Kids had to use a growth mindset in order to be successful with the stations, since even the adults struggled with some of the challenges. The kids were persistent and even took a bag home with all of the materials to keep trying at home.
We had a great week of fun activities to end 2017. Enjoy our slideshow of activities from the week. We are looking forward to 2018! Enjoy your break! The library staff selected and pulled over 150 of our library books covering a variety of genres. The library volunteer “elves” then gift wrapped all of the books and attached a brief summary. Fifth grade students had the option of perusing the wrapped books, reading the summaries, and selecting a book to check out. The mystique was quite appealing, and the students were excited by their choices and anxious to read a book they might not otherwise have selected for themselves.
