Right before winter break, 5th graders had the opportunity to check out a book recommended by someone else. Over 200 library books were wrapped in preparation for this engaging activity. Books were selected by library volunteers, library staff, and other students. 5th graders who wished to participate selected a book and checked it out. Students were filled with suspense and anticipation; they had no idea what book they had chosen until they unwrapped it! These “mystery” books included a variety of fiction genres, and students seemed quite pleased with their picks. This activity was a fabulous way to introduce students to books, authors, and genres they might not typically select or read on their own. Students who enjoyed their books were encouraged to share their love of reading and recommend these books to others!
