Students in Mrs. Cin’s second grade class recently explored several engineering tasks. Students worked in teams to create a “wall run” with cardboard tubes to transport an object down the hallway. Constraints of the design included the requirements of moving a puff ball or bell a distance of 2 feet or more from the start and designing at least 2 turns in the wall mounted runway. Teams found that it was necessary to test their design along the way and re-build as necessary. Successful runs were greeted with squeals of delight. The second task required students to build a catapult from craft sticks and rubber bands. Students then worked on projecting puff balls for distance and accuracy. A favorite challenge was projecting the puff over top of Mrs. Cin!
