A grand total of $1,450.00 was raised last week as students and staff in 3rd grade worked to build community and raise money in a "Penny Wars" fundraiser! Today, checks were presented to representatives from our school district's COCOA Packs program, and representatives raising money for the 12th Annual Logan’s Run & Walk for Autism: Moving from Awareness to Acceptance. We are so proud at the hard work by our 3rd grade students in their efforts to raise money and give back to our community!

Throughout the year, volunteers from our community have joined our classrooms to teach skills related to our social studies curriculum through a program called Junior Achievement.
Recently, third grade students in room 18 participated in this program. It was a great opportunity for students to learn about the community. A volunteer taught 5 lessons about zones within a city, goods and services, the importance of money and its role with taxes, the difference between needs and wants, and how to manage money. These lessons are extremely engaging with hands-on activities to help students understand these important concepts that tie into our Social Studies curriculum. Thank you to all of our Junior Achievement volunteers for this wonderful experience! Third Grade is participating in their annual “Pennies for C.O.C.O.A.” fundraiser. This exciting, plot-planning, 3rd grade activity demonstrates our C.O.C.O.A. principle of community. We will be donating all of the proceeds to two worthy, charitable, initiatives.
One of the worthy causes is our school district’s C.O.C.O.A. pack program. This program is not government funded and relies entirely on community volunteers and donations. Derry Township School District provides Cocoa Packs to 194 students in the district, and supplies families within our district with additional non-perishable food items for the weekend and throughout the summer. More information and volunteer coordination can be found on the district’s web site or by visiting www.cocoapacks.org. The other cause that we’ll be collecting for is the 12th Annual Logan’s Run & Walk for Autism: Moving from Awareness to Acceptance. The walk takes place on City Island on April 22 and coincides with April being Autism Month. All the funds raised provide educational, social, and recreational opportunities for the local autism community. More information about this fundraising event to raise awareness for Autism can be found on this link: http://bit.ly/2017Logans5k. Many teachers support a team known as Team COCOA if you’d like to support this endeavor as well. On Friday, April 7th, students from Mrs. Warren's and Miss Kenney’s classes took a break from PSSA testing in order to read to therapy animals from Caring Hearts Pet Therapy! Students practiced their reading skills by sharing a book of their choice with a furry listener. It was a pawsitively awesome experience, and we are so thankful for the volunteers and their pets for taking the time to visit!
